Individual Counselling
Counsellors are available to work with students on a one-on-one basis in relation to a variety of personal concerns and crisis situations including stress and anxiety, transition into or out of university, depression, eating concerns, relationship and interpersonal issues, trauma and abuse, body image and identity, to name a few. Appointments are usually 50 minutes in length. Our counsellors are trained in a range of therapeutic approaches dedicated to helping you achieve your goals.
Individual Counselling is available through two distinct therapy streams; Goal-Directed and Extended therapy. During your Care Planning Appointment, your counsellor can help determine which type of support is the best fit for your needs.
Goal-Directed Therapy
- Goal-Directed Therapy is designed to provide more immediate support for a specific concern, issue, or situation. There is no waitlist, so you can get started quickly. Appointments take place over a period of up to three months.
Extended Therapy
- Extended Therapy provides an opportunity to work on concerns that may benefit from longer-term or more in-depth counselling. It can include up to eight months of appointments and may involve exploring issues or addressing concerns that require more time to work through. Extended Therapy has a waitlist before appointments can begin.
Counsellors assist both undergraduate and graduate students with educational decision-making and planning including changing programs, future studies (post-diploma, graduate and professional), and career direction.
For guidance on course selection, course drops, academic standing and other concerns specific to your program of studies, your first step should be to consult with the academic advisor in your school/department. Unlike centralized guidance offices in the secondary school system, each Toronto Met program has administrative personnel designated to advise students on these matters.
